Today, I'm reviewing the Funwhole Book Café (set F9031), a charming modular building from the City series that fits on a 16x16 baseplate.

Instructions & Minifigures
In addition to the light kit, the set comes with a high-quality printed instruction manual (also available in PDF format on their website) and includes four minifigures: two men and two women.
Step 1
We start with the base, which features a tiled interior. While I’m not a big fan of the special plate with center stud, since the holes remain visible, they are mostly hidden once the build is complete. The cable management is handled quite well. The front façade includes a large awning, with printed details on the door and window display.
Step 2
Continuing with the ground floor, the right side features a secondary entrance, more printed elements, another awning, and an umbrella stand. Inside, we build a staircase leading to the future library on the upper floor.
Step 3
This step focuses on constructing a beautifully brick-built counter and a wall that opens outward to reveal the interior—a very practical feature! Notably, the coffee machine on the left uses a shiny metallic brick, adding a nice touch of realism.
Step 4
Here, we assemble the base for the second floor and install the wiring. I found this step relatively complex, as the cables are somewhat visible.
Step 5
This step involves building two lovely bookshelves and a desk. The exterior includes a flower-adorned balcony, highlighted by gorgeous white blossoms.
Step 6
In this part, we add cozy little details to the interior, enhancing the set's warm atmosphere. The second floor also features an opening wall, similar to the ground floor, making it easy to showcase the interior without removing the upper levels.
Step 7
This section is fairly simple, featuring a bed and desk on the third floor. While the back of the building is quite plain, the front is richly detailed.
Step 8
The battery pack is installed in this step. For those like me who prefer not to use batteries, you’ll need to find a creative way to cover the opening in a more aesthetically pleasing manner.
Step 9
The final result is very appealing, though the left side feels a bit bare. I also think the roof could have benefited from more texture. After placing the set on a 32x32 baseplate, I positioned it to the right, but I’ll need to make adjustments to hide some of the less polished details on the left side.
Step 10
Once illuminated, the set truly shines. As you can see in the photos, each floor has its own lighting, adding a unique charm to the build.
Conclusion
This set is stunning overall. While it has a few flaws, I find myself nitpicking to come up with criticisms.
Pros
- Integrated lighting
- Fully tiled interior
- Printed parts
- High-quality bricks
Cons
- Plain left side and side roofs
- No alternative cover for the battery slot
